Sixth Taste Helps Keep Down Weight

Gaining excessive weight is closely linked with the tongue’s ability to recognize the taste of fat in the food, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition reveals.

The human tongue can distinguish between the five tastes of bitter, sour, salty, sweet, and umami. But the research finds that there are people endowed with the sixth taste – those capable of tasting fat.

Tasting Fat: Sixth Taste

Consequently, as lead researcher Russell Keast indicated, those who are quick to pick out the taste of fatty acids can control the amount of the intake of fatty food better and are apt to put on less weight. He writes that there are individuals who can feel even very low concentrations of fat.

On the other hand, modern diets rich with fat may lead to benumbing the ability of certain people to distinguish this taste, which will result in their unchecked consummation of fatty foods.

These discoveries may pave the way to a completely new set of weight loss strategies, scientists believe.
